In the world of serious dive watches, OMEGA Planet Ocean has always been a name that commands respect.

Now, in 2025, the collection reaches its fourth generation, marking 20 years since the original model surfaced in 2005. The latest evolution doesn’t just tweak details – it redefines what Planet Ocean means today, blending professional-spec diving performance with everyday wearability.

This is the point where heritage, engineering, and modern design finally meet in one clean line.

From Marine to Planet Ocean: A Legacy in the Water

OMEGA’s relationship with the sea began in 1932 with the Marine, one of the earliest purpose-built wristwatches for civilian diving. The story continued with the first Seamaster in 1948, the legendary Seamaster 300 in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and hardcore tools like the Seamaster 1000 and PloProf.

The modern era arrived with the Seamaster Diver 300M in the ‘90s, cementing OMEGA as a reference in dive watch design.
Then came 2005: the birth of Planet Ocean, doubling the depth rating of the Diver 300M to 600 m, and offering a more robust, exploration-driven aesthetic.

Along the way, OMEGA introduced:

  • Liquidmetal™ on ceramic bezels (2009)
  • The Co-Axial Calibre 8500 with silicon balance spring (2011)
  • The challenge of true orange ceramic on a platinum Planet Ocean GMT (2014)
  • Master Chronometer certification and the all-ceramic Deep Black (2016)
  • And the extreme Ultra Deep, later brought into the Planet Ocean family (2022)

The new generation distills all of that into something sharper, slimmer, and more considered.

New Proportions, Same Purpose

For the 4th generation, the case has been completely reworked:

  • Diameter: 42 mm, echoing the original 2005 model
  • Thickness: reduced from 16.1 mm to 13.79 mm, making it far more wearable day-to-day
  • A flatter sapphire crystal brings a cleaner, more contemporary front profile

Architecturally, the watch now uses a two-part construction with an internal titanium ring hidden inside the case. This element strengthens the structure for 600 m water resistance while also giving the case flanks sharper, more sculpted lines.

In a bold move, OMEGA has also removed the helium escape valve, a long-standing visual signature of Planet Ocean, in favor of a purer silhouette that feels more modern and versatile on the wrist.

Dials, Colors, and Character

The new line-up spans seven references built around three core color identities:

  • Orange edition
Matte black dial with orange Arabic numerals and a matching [ZrO2] ceramic bezel, filled with a white hybrid diving scale. It’s the spiritual heir to the early Planet Ocean pieces that made orange a house code for the collection.
  • Blue edition
White numerals on a deep blue dial, paired with a blue ceramic bezel and white enamel diving scale. It’s calm, nautical, and very Seamaster in its attitude.
  • Black edition
Rhodium-plated Arabic numerals with a monochrome black [ZrO2] ceramic bezel and enamel scale, giving the watch a stealthier personality that moves easily from dive gear to tailored clothing.

All dials are matte black, with the familiar arrow hands and bold hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova. The Arabic numerals are now aperture-style, sharper and cleaner, echoing the updated case geometry while nodding to the first generation.

Bracelets, Rubber, and Everyday Ease

The redesign extends naturally to the bracelet.
Links now integrate into the case more seamlessly, with brushed outer parts and polished center sections creating depth without looking flashy. The profile is slimmer for comfort, and the clasp offers six micro-adjustment steps plus an extension system for diving.

For those who prefer a sportier, lighter wear, rubber straps with folding clasps are also available, matching the character of each colorway.

Engineered Like the Ultra Deep

Behind the Grade 5 titanium screw-down caseback – engraved with wave motifs, Planet Ocean and Seamaster markings, water-resistance details, and the iconic Seahorse medallion – beats the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8912.

This automatic movement delivers:

  • 60 hours of power reserve
  • High resistance to magnetism
  • Certification by METAS for accuracy, performance, and robustness

It’s the same engine used in the Ultra Deep, meaning what powers this 42 mm diver is the same technology built for the most extreme depths on Earth.

New Faces, Same Spirit of Adventure

To mark the launch, OMEGA has rolled out a global campaign starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Glen Powell—two actors who bring different shades of masculinity to the story.
One wears the blue variant with a more classic, cinematic air. The other sports the legendary orange, embodying energy and forward motion.

Together, they frame Planet Ocean not just as a professional dive instrument, but as a symbol for men who are ready to go deeper—into the ocean, into challenge, and into their own next chapter.
